Healthy Stadia Hosts Sport and Mental Health Conference for Fit4Health Programme
As part of the EU funded Fit4Health project, Healthy Stadia hosted a half-day conference on the subject of mental health and positive coaching in sport on 13th May at St Helens Rugby League Club. The conference was inspired by the UK's recently launched Mental Health Charter for Sport and Recreation, and additional work undertaken across Europe as part of the Fit4Health project that has developed guidelines relating to health promoting sports environments for young athletes.
Attended by 50 delegates and with presentations from seven speakers, the focus of the morning's discussion was on mental health awareness and positive coaching environments within the context of aspiring / performance level youth sport. There was a strong emphasis on the sharing of good practice amongst different sports, and how sports clubs (both amateur and professional) and governing bodies are able take a more preventative approach to mental health, such as the 'mental health first aiders' programme developed at Premier League clubs that is delivered by the If You Care Share Foundation. This workshop came as a one of the final actions of the Fit 4 Health project that was funded by the EU Sport Unit between January 2014 and June 2015. The project came to a close at an International Conference held in Ancona, Italy on 11th June, where the project's guidelines for healthier sports environments and 'Golden Rules' were presented to an audience of sports professionals and media, including representation from the Italian Olympic Sports Association.
