The kick off meeting of the Fit 4 Health project was held in Ancona, Italy over 6-7th February. The project will last for 18 months, and is co-funded by the EU’s Sport Unit (DG Education and Culture),
focussing on the safeguarding of young elite athletes between the ages of 14-19, specifically the prevention of physical and psychological side-effects associated with overtraining and inappropriate coaching at a young age.
Coordinated by the Italian organisation ‘CONI’ in association with the Italian National Olympic Committee, partners involved in the project from Finland, Bulgaria, Croatia and the UK, met in Ancona for two days to formalise the project’s work packages, and the structure of the pilot tournaments that will be used to asses both current practice and any gaps in the safeguarding of young elite athletes. The project will aim to start an EU-level social dialogue for the sport and leisure sector, with the aim of enhancing the quality of sports training centres, sports associations and their staff. This integrated approach will cover the key topics of: tailored physical preparation and injury prevention; coaching techniques and psychological wellbeing; nutrition and lifestyle advice; and, awareness of doping / performance enhancement issues.
